Who it fits
Good fit for
You should consider this camera if you want a lightweight APS-C system for travel or everyday carry. The 10 fps burst speed helps when capturing action or fast-moving subjects. The Fast Hybrid AF ensures you keep focus sharp in dynamic situations. If you prefer manual exposure control during video recording, the full HD 60p capability offers flexibility. The Wi-Fi feature simplifies sharing images directly to your devices. This setup suits those who value portability alongside strong optical performance.
Who should skip it
You might want to look elsewhere if you need a complete kit out of the box. This listing is for the body only, so you must purchase lenses separately. If you require 4K video resolution, this model stops at Full HD. Users needing a built-in viewfinder will find only an LCD screen here. Those who prefer a smaller micro four-thirds sensor may find the APS-C format too bulky. Additionally, if you do not use Wi-Fi for file transfer, this connectivity feature adds little value to your workflow.
Verdict: The Sony NEX-5R offers a compelling mix of APS-C quality and compact size. It suits users who need fast focus and portability in a body-only package.
Key specs explained
Sensor Resolution: 16.1 MP
This resolution captures enough detail for standard prints and digital use. It balances file size with clarity, avoiding the heavy storage demands of higher megapixel counts. You get sharp images without excessive noise in good light. This spec suits casual shooters who prioritize manageable file sizes over extreme cropping flexibility.
Sensor Format: APS-C
An APS-C sensor is larger than typical smartphone or compact camera sensors. This larger surface area collects more light, improving low-light performance and dynamic range. You benefit from better image quality and shallower depth of field compared to smaller formats. It is a standard choice for entry-level mirrorless systems.
Autofocus System: Fast Hybrid AF
This system combines phase-detection and contrast-detection for quick focusing. Phase detection allows the camera to lock onto subjects rapidly, similar to DSLRs. You experience fewer missed shots when capturing moving subjects or in low light. This spec ensures reliable tracking for both photos and video recording sessions.
Burst Shooting Speed: Up to 10 fps
The camera can capture ten frames per second in continuous shooting mode. This speed helps you freeze fast action, such as sports or wildlife. You increase your chances of getting the perfect moment by capturing a rapid sequence. This spec is valuable for action photography where timing is critical.
Video Resolution: Full HD at 60p/24p
Full HD resolution provides clear 1080p video with good detail. The 60p frame rate allows for smooth motion and slow-motion effects, while 24p offers a cinematic look. You have flexibility in editing and sharing video content online. This spec meets standard requirements for high-definition video recording on modern devices.
Compact Design and Build Details
According to the listing, the Sony NEX-5R body measures 4.37 inches in length, 1.54 inches in height, and 2.32 inches in width. These dimensions place it in the compact mirrorless category. The camera weighs 9.76 ounces. This light weight makes it easy to carry in a small bag or pocket. You can hold it comfortably for extended periods without fatigue. The black finish provides a neutral look that suits various styles.
The listing describes this as a body-only configuration. This means you must attach a lens separately. You can choose from the 18-55mm lens kit or other compatible options. The compact size allows for quick handling. You can adjust settings rapidly without bulky protrusions interfering with your grip. The small footprint helps when shooting in tight spaces or crowded events.
This design prioritizes portability over extensive weather sealing. The materials listed focus on reducing mass while maintaining structural integrity. You get a tool that fits easily into your daily carry. The layout supports straightforward operation for users who value ease of transport. The slim profile ensures it does not dominate your field of view when you look through the viewfinder or use the LCD screen. It is built for mobility.
Setup and Daily Operation Guide
Setting up the Sony NEX-5R begins with understanding its compact form. The body-only configuration means you must select a compatible lens separately. You can choose between the standard kit or add the 18-55mm lens option. Once paired, the camera’s small footprint, measuring 4.37 by 1.54 by 2.32 inches, allows for easy handling. Its weight of 9.76 ounces reduces fatigue during extended shooting sessions.
The Fast Hybrid Autofocus system combines phase and contrast detection. This setup ensures rapid focus acquisition, mimicking DSLR performance. You benefit from consistent sharpness in stills and video. The 16.1 MP APS-C sensor drives the image quality, providing sufficient detail for most digital and print needs.
For daily use, the camera supports Full HD video at 60p or 24p. You retain full exposure control during recording, allowing for manual adjustments in dynamic lighting. The burst shooting speed reaches up to 10 fps. This feature captures fast-moving subjects with minimal motion blur, ideal for action photography.
Connectivity is handled via Wi-Fi. You can share images directly to compatible devices without cables. The system also supports downloadable camera apps. These extensions add functionality to your workflow. The 3-inch LCD screen, mentioned in the title, provides a clear view for framing and reviewing shots. This combination of specs makes the NEX-5R suitable for users who prioritize portability without sacrificing advanced control or speed.
Before You Buy This Camera
Before you buy the Sony NEX-5R, verify lens compatibility. Since this listing is for the body only, you must purchase a compatible E-mount lens separately. Check your existing lenses or plan your budget for a new kit. The camera supports downloadable apps, but you need a smartphone with Wi-Fi capabilities to use them. Keep spare batteries and memory cards ready, as the compact body may have limited battery life during heavy use. This model fits well if you want DSLR-quality images in a smaller package. However, if you need modern connectivity like Bluetooth or 4K video, look at newer options in 2026. The NEX-5R remains a solid choice for those prioritizing sensor size and portability over the latest features. Ensure you are comfortable with its older interface and menu system before committing.

- Confirm you have or will buy a compatible E-mount lens.
